Focus vs. Multi-Tasking

I read an article recently on the subject of email making us dumber. It stated that after a person spends some time sitting at a computer answering emails and messages that they score lower on an IQ test that is given immediately after. The article goes on to state that these people were not actually dumber, but their brain was just in a different mental state than an IQ test requires. Supposedly we humans have two brain modes. One mode is for focus and the other is for multi-tasking. IQ test obviously requires focus, while the cluttered task of answering messages on multiple subjects requires that focus to be spread around. Also, it takes a period of time for your brain to adjust to a switch in modes.

This was on my mind last night as I attempted to play softball for the first time. I have never been a real athlete (or even a pretend one), but I figured that I would give it a try. I think that sports are actually a very good way to not only exercise your body, but also your mind. In most all sports, you are required to use both modes of your brain at the same time. You must be constantly aware of everything going on around you, while at the same time focusing heavily on the task at which you are currently performing. This goes without even mentioning the pure reflex actions that your brain is perfecting. Not many people would say it, but I think that sports may actually be a very mental stimulating activity. It may even make your smarter.

Time, Space, Perception, God

Most people who discuss time, either discuss it in relation to the human struggle, or they discuss it as a scientific constant that all other variables are affected by. This discussion will focus more on what time actually is, and the difference between our perception and God's perception of the phenomenon that we refer to as "time".

There are many topics in the Bible that people either prefer not to discuss, or they bend the words of the scripture to make it make sense. I believe that we would be better off if we bent our perception and consider the holy scripture to be correct. For instance, what happens to us between the time we die and the time we are judged? There is clearly a judgment time, when both Christians and non-Christians will be held accountable for their sins, (of course the difference is that the Christians will have a solution for their sin problem, but that is another section for a later time). So where do we go between these two events? Are we sent to heaven, only to return at the end of time to be judged, and then get sent back? Or is there a waiting room for heaven and hell? Is this waiting area what Jesus referred to on the cross as paradise? Many believe that to be the case, but I dove a little deeper.

And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, HEBREWS 9:27

This verse would lead you to believe that right after you die that you are judged. However, Revelation very clearly states that there will be a judgment for all people at once.

11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. REVELATION 20:11-12

This scripture is just talking about those who are not Christians, but it is talking about all of them. So where have these "dead" been waiting all this time? Well here is where my mind begin churning. To think of this in human terms, is to not understand the power of almighty God. Allow me to share.

Let's stop for a moment and try to visualize things (meaning everything in the universe) in God's eyes. In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth. Well guess what, that encompasses every bit of matter in the universe, and scientist have proven that without matter there would be no time. That is why we call it space-time. Therefore when space was created, so was time itself. When God spoke the world into existence, he also started our clock as we know it. We are so small minded that we assume that the physics that make up our universe is just something that God is also affected by. But God is not affected by anything, he created everything that we can perceive, even the laws that effect the world around us. Therefore, if we believe that God created time, then that can only mean one thing, God exists outside of the grasp of time. Now visualize that with me for a moment.

Examine the picture above. Think of it as a cube of cheese. Now cut off a very thin slice of the cheese and examine it in your mind. Imagine that tiny slice is actually all of the universe at one instance in time. Put all of the slices together and you have the complete span of time and space as God created it. Have I lost you yet? Remember, God created time and therefore exists outside of time. Think of the way that he sees it as the way that you are looking at the blue box above. You can take a glance at the screen and view all of the events that will ever happen in the universe at "one time". This is the power of God. Our souls are simply being pulled and pushed at the same pace through space - this is what time really is --- Perspective.
